Leipzig's most impressive arcade is the best place to experience the architectural and historical grandeur of this city of trade fairs and commerce.
The five-storey Passagen-Messehaus was built between 1912 and 1914 according to plans by the architect Theodor Kösser. It was the leather manufacturer Anton Mädler who initiated its construction. For this, however, the history-laden Auerbachs Hof had to be replaced. The tavern Auerbachs Keller, which became famous through one of the scenes in Goethe's drama "Faust", was thankfully preserved.Originally, the Mädler Passage was the place for sellers of porcelain, ceramics and earthenware. Today, the elegant 140-meter-long shopping promenade is a real tourist magnet. Besides exclusive shops you can also find the Sanftwut cabaret here. Together with the Königshauspassage and the Messehofpassage, this top shopping district forms a unique system of arcades.
