Welcome to Germany's biggest cultural event! The Open Monument Day® always takes place on the second Sunday in September. The day of action is coordinated nationwide by the German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD). The day is organised locally by countless organisers - from monument owners, associations and initiatives to full-time monument conservators - without whom the Open Monument Day would not be possible. The annual event is Germany's contribution to the European Heritage Days, which celebrate monument protection, make monuments accessible and celebrate different cultures throughout Europe. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of history as you stroll through mysterious castles, winding half-timbered houses and magnificent churches. Over 5,000 monument doors will open on 8 September 2024 across Germany for you, your friends and the whole family. Discover otherwise inaccessible places, be inspired by historical craftsmanship or take an exclusive look over the shoulders of experts during restoration work. From bike tours and city tours to joint walks along several monuments, there is a lot to discover
Since 1999, the DSD has organised the Open Monument Day under a different motto every year. In 2024, the Open Monument Day will be held under the theme "Wahr-Zeichen. Witnesses of history". This theme focuses on monuments as authentic "true" testimonies. At the same time, they can symbolise a region, act as a landmark or stand for very personal stories. Germany's largest cultural event aims to show just how many landmarks there are in every single monument. Under this motto, organisers throughout Germany draw attention to the truth and relevance of their historical testimonies and communicate this significance to the general public.
