The Saxon Wine Hiking Trail connects the gems of the Dresden surroundings along the Elbe and leads to the most beautiful vineyards, viewpoints, and wine cellars. Baroque and modern Dresden, the picturesque Pirna, the villa and garden town of Radebeul, and the porcelain city of Meißen are just some of the historically significant stages of the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail. Marked testimonies of the over 850-year-old viticulture in the Elbe valley can be found here as well as modern wineries and cozy wine taverns. Here you can taste the rare drops from more than 60 grape varieties – including Riesling, white, gray, and Pinot Noir, as well as Traminer, Scheurebe, and the Goldriesling that grows only here on the Elbe. There is a specially created website for the Saxon Wine Hiking Trail with all information about the individual stages, maps, interesting sights, places to eat and much more: https://weinwandern-sachsen.de/ Attention! Please check the opening hours of the various places to eat along the way here before you start your hike, so you don’t end up in front of closed doors. For example, "Besenwirtschaften" (seasonal wine taverns) are usually only open on weekends or in spring and autumn.
Hiking from Pirna to Dresden, hikers and wine lovers pass stunning villas and magnificent castles. A detour into the Dresden Old Town leads to the Zwinger, Semperoper, and Frauenkirche. In Radebeul, hikers should take time for the Saxon Viticulture Museum Hoflößnitz and the first experiential winery in Europe at Wackerbarth Castle. Then it continues to Meißen: from afar, the impressive castle hill with the cathedral and Albrechtsburg can be seen. The Wine Experience World of the Saxon Wine Cooperative Meißen offers extraordinary insights into the history and present of viticulture. At the end of the hiking trail, winemakers and hosts of numerous historic wine taverns in Diesbar-Seußlitz invite you.
The Saxon Wine Hiking Trail is divided into 6 daily stages with an average of 15 to 18 km or 5 to 6 hours of walking per day.
The route is not barrier-free.
