The train station in Kamenz is a good starting point for your hike. A city tour in Kamenz is already worthwhile. Here you will discover the St. Anne's monastery church with the sacral museum, the St. Mary's church, and the market square with the town hall and Andreas fountain. At first, the route goes through the suburbs of Kamenz along the Upper Lusatian Ring Path, which is left towards Wendisch Baselitz. In the Sorbian-influenced villages, you will be accompanied by typical crosses along the roadside. Here you will find time to reflect. The route continues through shady forests and over old field paths. Then it goes along the Via Regia towards Panschwitz-Kuckau with the St. Marienstern monastery. From there further to Crostwitz. A look into the church is worthwhile here. (Stage 1: approx. 17.5 km)
From Crostwitz you follow the Via Regia to Bautzen. Trees often provide shade along the road and the view can wander far. In Bautzen, the pilgrimage route crosses the Spree and leads up to the beautiful 1,000-year-old old town with St. Peter's Cathedral.
The route mostly runs on little-trafficked side roads. If you do not like walking on asphalt, you can take the bus back on this stage (Stage 2: approx. 18 km)
After the urban and sacral beauties of Bautzen with its towers and churches, you will experience pure nature on the 3rd stage, as soon as you leave the city area. Over cozy meadow paths and through the forest it goes up to Mount Schmoritz, then further to Hromadnik and Czorneboh. Enjoy the views in the Upper Lusatian Highlands. Past blooming meadows, the path leads to Cunewalde, with the largest village church in Germany. (Stage 3, approx. 18 km)
From Cunewalde it goes up to Bieleboh. The tower on the ridge offers a magnificent panoramic view. To the east, the path leads over the ridge towards Löbau. In Löbau you will find a cosy town with a baroque town hall and the impressive St. Nicolai church. (Stage 4, approx. 22.5 km)
After Löbau, the pilgrimage route Via Sacra splits into a north and a south route. We continue along the north route. The path leads onto the Löbau mountain through a lovely avenue. Via a worthwhile detour, the Geldkellerweg, further to the Oskar Rolle bench with a great view, the summit with the cast iron tower is reached. The route then leads down from the Löbau mountain and up to the Rotstein via pleasant forest paths. Over narrow, enchanted forest paths and meadow paths it goes down to Sohland am Rotstein. (Stage 5, approx. 17 km)
From Sohland am Rotstein the route leads to Reichenbach. The town surprises with an extraordinary church. From Reichenbach the path heads towards Mengelsdorf and then into the Königshain mountains. Fantastic granite rocks await you: Teufelsstein, Hochstein, Totenstein and especially Schoorstein are beautiful formations. The path continues to Kodersdorf (Stage 6, approx. 23 km)
From Kodersdorf the route goes via Kunnersdorf and through the Schöpstal valley. Then follow the Via Regia over Ebersbach into Görlitz. This stage impresses with its castles. It is worth spending a day in Görlitz to explore the city. (Stage 7, approx. 18 km)
Out of the city centre of Görlitz it goes down to the Neisse river. Along it leads the shady path towards Landeskrone, which you climb steeply uphill. The path then descends through a beautiful deciduous mixed forest to Pfaffendorf and to Kreuzberg. Through a cherry avenue and lonely forest paths you reach the hidden tower on the Neuberzsdorf height, which offers a stunning panoramic view. Slightly downhill you reach the Berzdorf lake. The route continues along the lake to Hagenwerder. (Stage 8, approx. 22 km)
From Hagenwerder it goes along the Oder-Neisse cycle path towards Ostritz. In Leuba it is worth leaving the Oder-Neisse cycle path and climbing the Knorrberg. Here you will be rewarded with a very beautiful view. On comfortable forest paths you descend again into the Neisse valley to the St. Marienthal monastery. (Stage 9, approx. 18.5 km) Alternatively, the Oder-Neisse cycle path can be used from Hagenwerder to Ostritz.
From the St. Marienthal monastery it now goes along the Oder-Neisse cycle path to Hirschfelde. Then the Wer river winds through green meadows to Zittau. Zittau has a lot to offer with its historical buildings and the Lenten cloths and invites you to linger. (Stage 10, approx. 20 km)
The route leads from Zittau southwards out of the city towards the mountains. Bizarre rocks and magnificent views of the Töpfer and Scharfenstein await you. Then it goes on to Oybin with the monastery ruins. (Stage 11, approx. 14.5 km)
From Oybin it is only an ascent to Jonsdorf. On steep paths the route continues up to Lausche, at 793 meters the highest peak of Lusatia. Descending through a beautiful forest you reach Großschönau with its typical half-timbered houses (Stage 12, approx. 18 km).
From Großschönau you reach the Weißen and Schwarzen Stein. Around the Forstenberg with beautiful views Spitzkunnersdorf is soon reached and thus also the Oderwitz Spitzberg with its fantastic panoramic view. The town of Oderwitz is a nice stop for all mill enthusiasts. Through forests and fields the route leads to Herrnhut. (Stage 13, approx. 24 km)
From Herrnhut the path leads to Berthelsdorf, further via Herwigsdorf and finally back to Löbau. (Stage 14, approx. 15 km)
It is also possible to start at another point or just walk a specific stage of the Via Sacra. In the larger cities there is always the possibility to arrive and depart by public transport.
