Red Tower

Enige feiten

The oldest surviving building in the city and a former part of the city fortifications.

Whether the name comes from the red porphyry tuff or the long use as a dungeon is left to the imagination of the beholder. Obviously, the tower also stimulated the imagination of a product designer, who made the shape fit for a well-known washing-up liquid as early as 1968.

The Red Tower was built at the end of the 12th century and is the oldest landmark in the city. The tower owes its name to the red colour of the attached brick storey. In the course of time, the Red Tower took on various functions: Keep, part of the old city wall, prison and museum.
