With the Mahlzeit! exhibition series, the Museum Gunzenhauser, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is devoting itself to the theme of food in art in 2026. Far beyond its function as an everyday consumer good, food in art has become an artistic and historical documentation of human and social conditions. It becomes a carrier of meaning and images of socio-political discourses, socio-economic relations, social orders, cultural codes, intercultural diversity and power relations.
From July 4 to November 1, 2026, the second exhibition "Serving Gender" focuses on the connections between gender roles and food and presents works of art that link work and care, bodies and social roles with the preparation and distribution of food across epochs and invites visitors to re-read visual narratives from a feminist perspective.
