With the exhibition series "Mahlzeit!", the Museum Gunzenhauser, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is dedicating itself to the theme of food in art in 2026. Far beyond its function as an everyday consumer good, food in art has become an artistic and historical documentation of human and social conditions. It becomes a carrier of meaning and images of socio-political discourses, socio-economic relations, social orders, cultural codes, intercultural diversity and power relations.
From November 27, 2026 to April 4, 2027, the third part of the exhibition, "At the Table", is dedicated to the social and cultural aspects of eating in art: convivial moments, social situations, communal contexts as well as cultural traditions, festivals and rituals. The focus is on the question of how culture is formed around food and drink and when food itself becomes a cultural phenomenon.
