From the Rosts Wiesen parking lot, turn first right into Friedhofstraße and follow it to the end. Then continue straight ahead on Untere Schlossstraße, always uphill. You reach the historic old town with its houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, walk over the market, past the Musikkabinett Augustusburg and the bronze city model.
At the market, turn left after the Lehngericht and before the town hall (tourist information) . The path now leads through the Kurfürstin Anna Garden, built in 2018. The herb garden was created in honor of Anna of Saxony, who was already intensively involved with herbal knowledge in her time. In addition to interesting insights into the world of kitchen and medicinal herbs, you can also enjoy a fantastic view here.
At the top, we recommend a short detour to the right through the gate onto the plateau between the castle and Anna Garden. From here you can enjoy another wonderful view and also visit the legendary castle lime tree. Then go back through the gate and turn right into the rear castle courtyard of Augustusburg Castle. Here once stood the castle's economic buildings with the well house, bakery, stables for horses, etc. Today, the well house can still be found here, which has been an associated UNESCO World Heritage site of the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří mining region since 2019.
The youth hostel is also located here.
A gate to the right leads into the front castle courtyard. The front core castle was the area for the electoral family and the court. Here is the ticket office for the numerous museums housed in the castle. Furthermore, the castle church with the famous Cranach altar can be found in this area (only accessible to visitors as part of a guided tour). In the observation tower of the Lindenhaus is the tower gallery, which shows changing exhibitions from March to November and simultaneously offers an impressive view of the surrounding landscape – accessible via 132 steps from the castle courtyard. The Augustusburg castle theater, known far beyond the town's borders, can also be experienced here.
Through the north gate you reach the historic old town again. Past the pillory you go uphill to Schellsieben. Here are the oldest houses in the town of Augustusburg. They were once inhabited by linen weavers. Now keep right in front of Schellsieben towards Schlossstraße. On the left side is the Old Pharmacy, today a handicraft shop and holiday apartment. Turn left into Pfarrgasse.
You reach the church square with the widely visible town church "St. Petri", which forms a silhouette together with the castle from almost all sides afar. The church was first built in 1444, burned down several times and was rebuilt – the current church was rebuilt from 1894 to 1896.
To the left you see the Lotterhof. Once the residence of the builder of Augustusburg Castle, Hieronymus Lotter, it now houses a painting studio with various painting courses. Furthermore, 2 holiday apartments invite you to stay longer in Augustusburg. Also take a look at the over 450-year-old Lotter lime tree.
If you walk straight past the church to the left, you reach "Kantors Ruh". The cantor used this beautiful viewpoint as a "resting place" between sermons and after work, and you can still enjoy a wonderful view from here today.
The path then leads behind the church and you come to Schlossweg, which you turn left onto. On Schlossweg it goes uphill in a left curve, past another beautiful viewpoint. At the next junction turn right and then immediately right again. After a few meters on the left side is the upper station of the over 100-year-old cable railway. In the building of the upper station there is a model of the railway. Through the glass roof, you can look down into the engine room. The funicular connects the districts Erdmannsdorf and Augustusburg every 20 minutes with an 8-minute trip. A hiking trail through the forest runs parallel to the railway; in sufficient snow a 1.5 km long natural toboggan run.
* Below the building of the upper station a path leads down to the left, which takes you directly to the area of Rosts Wiesen with toboggan run and then – to the right – ski slope. Once more right – through the upper station of Rosts Wiesen – you reach the parking lot again.
* If you prefer to walk on paved paths, you can walk straight down the street Zur Drahtseilbahn past the upper station of the cable railway. Then turn left into Friedhofstraße and this also leads back to the starting point of the circular walk.
